Coming up with solutions to customers' packaging problems is part of Van der Windt's normal business. Below one of our people explains an every day example of how we work with our customers. Recently I talked to a customer who showed me an extremely unattractive root vegetable. 'What is that?' I asked while thinking there was no way that anyone would buy something as ugly. ‘This is what we are going to sell to a supermarket chain', said the client. ‘It is a kohlrabi'. Although in the past it used to be eaten regularly it has become one of the so-called ‘forgotten vegetables'. There are yellow-fleshed varieties and white-fleshed varieties. The white-fleshed varieties are only used by the processing industry. The 'Friese gele selectie Runia' variety (Friesland yellow selection Runia) used to be grown a lot in the north of the Netherlands because it has an attractive spherical shape with hardly any ‘neck' and is not susceptible to splitting. There are also varieties with different coloured tops, such as the 'Hollandse Roodkop' (Dutch Red Top), the 'Friese Paarskop' (Friesland Purple Top) and the 'Gele Groenkop' (Yellow Green Top). ‘Now that everybody is watching their spending the interest in kohlrabi is also growing once again. It is also very healthy and it tastes good' ‘My goodness', I answered, ‘that is quite a story for such a root vegetable'. ‘It sure is', said the client with broad grin on his face and justifiable pride in his product, ‘but there is just one problem: I don't know how to label it because self-adhesive labels won't stick and fall off'. ‘But, esteemed client, you are talking to Van der Windt. Of course we have a solution for you', I replied equally proud of my product. ‘The best solution for your beautiful kohlrabi is the ElastiBand®.
